Master's Program (S-2)

The Master's Program in Tropical Medicine of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is an interdisciplinary branch of medicine that deals with health problems that occur individually, more commonly, or are more challenging to control in tropical and subtropical regions. Doctors specializing in this field diagnose and treat various diseases and health conditions. This study program provides studies supported by expert teaching staff and an up-to-date curriculum with international medical standards.

Graduate Profile

The following is a list of graduate profiles found in Master’s Program in Tropical Medicine

Graduates of this study program can work as research epidemiologists in health research institutions, such as government agencies, universities, or non-governmental organizations. Their duties include planning and conducting epidemiological studies on communicable and non-communicable diseases and analyzing data to identify disease patterns and risk factors.

Some graduates also choose to work as tropical health program managers in government agencies or international health organizations. They are responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating health programs in the tropics, including infectious disease prevention and control programs.

Graduates of this study program can also work as international health experts in multilateral organizations such as WHO, UNICEF, or the World Bank. Their duties include providing technical advice to developing country governments on health policies, designing and implementing global health programs, and collaborating with international partners to improve public health.

Some graduates choose to work as field doctors in tropical regions vulnerable to communicable and non-communicable diseases. They provide primary health care to local communities, conduct disease surveillance, and provide health education on disease prevention and healthy lifestyles.

As a disaster health consultant, they will work for humanitarian agencies or government bodies involved in health emergency response in the tropics. Their duties include disaster response planning and preparation, coordination of field medical teams, and post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction of health systems.
