On Saturday, December 3, 2022, the USU Faculty of Medicine received a visit and held a discussion with the Alzheimer Indonesia Foundation. The Dean of the USU Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. dr. Aldy Safruddin Rambe, Sp.S (K), Vice Dean III dr. Inke Nadia Diniyanti Lubis, M.Ked (Ped), Sp.A, Ph.D and Staff of the Neurology Department of the USU Faculty of Medicine dr. Fasihah Irfani Fitri, Sp.N, Subsp NGD (K) were present in the meeting. The Alzheimer Indonesia Foundation was represented by members of the Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. dr. Yuda Turana, Sp and Executive Director Michael Dirk Roelof Maitimoe.



The meeting discussed plans to develop cooperation between the Alzheimer Indonesia Foundation (ALZI), the USU Faculty of Medicine and the USU FK Neurology Department which has been established so far. dr. Fasihah Irfani Fitri, Sp. N, Subsp NGD (K) who is also the Regional Coordinator (Korwil) ALZI Medan explained the programs that have been implemented so far which include lay education activities to increase public awareness about dementia, caregivers meetings as a forum for sharing and education and various post-diagnosis support for people with dementia (ODD) and their families. He also explained the challenges in improving the quality of dementia services in Medan city. He proposed a joint program of activities focusing on training health workers including general practitioners, nurses, physiotherapists, and other health professionals to support post-diagnosis services. It was also proposed that training for caregivers be conducted to strengthen their skills and knowledge in caring for ODD at home and various other long-term plans. Since 2017, ALZI Medan has actively contributed to providing services, education, and early detection of dementia. The Memory Clinic, available at H. Adam Malik Hospital Medan as a referral center for patients with dementia, is one of the synergies between ALZI Medan and FK USU. Every month ALZI Medan holds meetings with people with dementia, caregivers and volunteers to share information and education and provide support to families of people with dementia.
