Prof. Dr. dr. Elmeida Effendy, M.Ked(KJ)., Sp.KJ(K)., emphasized the crucial role of psychiatrists in addressing increasingly complex mental health challenges. “Mental health has become a critical issue within today’s healthcare system. Graduates are expected to adapt to scientific advancements while delivering comprehensive and humane care to patients,” she stated.
The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU), organized a series of academic activities including the introduction of new consultants, the inauguration of psychiatry specialists from cohorts 169 to 173, and the introduction of new residents in the Specialist Medical Education Program (PPDS) on Tuesday, April 14, 2025. The event was held at the Kutaraja Ballroom, 2nd Floor, Tiara Convention Center.
The Head of the Psychiatry Study Program, Prof. Dr. dr. Elmeida Effendy, M.Ked(KJ)., Sp.KJ(K)., delivered remarks highlighting the important role of psychiatrists in addressing increasingly complex mental health challenges. “Mental health has become one of the key issues in today’s healthcare system. Graduates are expected to adapt to the advancement of knowledge while providing comprehensive and human services to patients,” she stated.
The inauguration ceremony was marked by the conferment of professional insignia to five newly appointed psychiatry specialists by the Head of the Study Program. This moment symbolized formal recognition of their competence and readiness to carry out professional practice.
In addition, the event also served as an introduction of new consultants who will strengthen the academic and healthcare services within FK USU, as well as the introduction of 10 new PPDS participants who will begin their specialist training in psychiatry.
The event was officially opened by the Dean of FK USU, Prof. Dr. dr. Aldy Safruddin Rambe, Sp.S(K), who expressed appreciation for the achievements of the doctors who had completed their specialist education.“ This inauguration is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment of the trainees. We hope that the newly inaugurated specialists will become professionals who not only excel clinically but also demonstrate empathy and integrity in delivering mental healthcare services to the community,” he stated.
He also advised the newly inaugurated specialists to always uphold the principle of “Adab Before Knowledge,” emphasizing that character and ethics form the foundation of a person, and that high levels of knowledge must be accompanied by strong moral values and proper conduct. Furthermore, he highlighted the principle of “Primum non nocere” (first, do no harm), a fundamental concept in medicine and medical ethics which underscores that a doctor’s actions must always prioritize patient safety.
