On March 20-21, 2023, the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU) welcomed another visit from SingHealth. This meeting was a follow-up activity after the FK USU and USU Hospital teams visited DUKE-NUS and Singapore General Hospital on August 10-11, 2022, to benchmark and explore the implementation of cooperation in research, education, and development of laboratory facilities and services in the fields of Tropical and Infectious Diseases, Oncology, and Cardiology.
SingHealth was represented by Prof. Balram Chowbay, Dr. Edwin Low, Ng Yan Fei, Deborah Chew, Kate Ying, and Wayan Tsai. The meeting began with a public lecture by Prof. Balram on Pharmacogenomics and its therapeutic applications, followed by parallel in-depth discussions on collaborative studies, laboratory development, visiting professors, and fellowships. In addition, SingHealth also conducted a site visit to Prof. Chairuddin P. Lubis USU Hospital and the Anatomical Pathology laboratory of FK USU to support the improvement of laboratory service standards.
From the discussion and review, SingHealth recommended that three main priorities, Dementia, Cardiology, and Lung Cancer, be collaborative projects and provide inputs for developing an integrated laboratory. Furthermore, FK USU will prepare a proposal related to these priority studies and a proposal for developing an integrated laboratory at FK USU.
