Medan, August 18, 2026 – The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU), welcomed an academic visit from Dr. Alexis Ribas of the University of Barcelona on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. He was received by the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Internationalization, Prof. Dr. dr. Dina Keumala Sari, M.Gizi, Sp.GK, Subsp.PK. The visit was part of efforts to strengthen academic networks and explore opportunities for research collaboration in the field of rodent-borne diseases.
During the visit, Alexis Ribas continued discussions with dr. Sunna Vyatra Hutagalung, MS, Ph.D., from the Department of Parasitology, FK USU, regarding plans to develop research collaboration, particularly on diseases transmitted by rodents. The discussion covered opportunities for joint research, knowledge and experience exchange, and the development of studies relevant to public health issues.
Rodent-borne diseases are an important health concern because rodents can serve as reservoirs or vectors for various disease-causing agents. Through research collaboration, the institutions are expected to develop studies that contribute to a better understanding of risk factors, transmission mechanisms, and strategies for preventing and controlling diseases that may affect communities.
In addition to the academic discussions, Alexis Ribas also visited the Parasitology Laboratory at FK USU. The visit provided an opportunity to observe the laboratory’s facilities and activities firsthand while gaining insight into the research resources and capabilities available at FK USU.
This initiative also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through strengthening research and knowledge development aimed at preventing and controlling diseases that may threaten public health. Furthermore, the collaboration between FK USU and the University of Barcelona reflects the spirit of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through strengthened international partnerships in education, research, and health.
The visit is expected to serve as an initial step toward establishing sustainable collaboration between FK USU and the University of Barcelona, particularly in parasitology and rodent-related diseases. The collaboration is expected to strengthen research capacity, create opportunities for academic exchange, and generate scholarly contributions that benefit the advancement of knowledge and public health at both local and global levels.
