The Faculty of Medicine USU delegation earned Silver and Bronze Medals in the Individual Award category at SIMPIC 2026 (Siriraj International Medical Microbiology, Parasitology, and Immunology Competition), held at Mahidol University, Bangkok—demonstrating their dedication, hard work, and academic excellence on the global stage.

The Siriraj International Medical Microbiology, Parasitology, and Immunology Competition (SIMPIC) is an annual event that brings together medical students from various countries to showcase their knowledge and skills in microbiology, parasitology, and immunology. The competition is hosted at Siriraj Hospital, the teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok. This year marked the 15th anniversary of SIMPIC, held from March 28 to 31, 2026.

Beyond being an academic competition, SIMPIC provides opportunities for participants to build international networks, exchange ideas and cultures, and foster lasting friendships among medical students worldwide. The event also featured a variety of activities, including cultural immersion programs, visits to the Siriraj Hospital history museum and traditional Thai medicine museum, as well as tours of historical landmarks in Bangkok—enriching participants’ cultural insights.

SIMPIC 2026 was attended by 59 teams from 43 universities across 8 countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, China, Poland, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Bangladesh. The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU), sent three teams as delegates:

USU01:

  • Ruth Maria Situmorang
  • Nicholash Marcolius Sutanto
  • Tiffany Frolence
  • Enrico Franditho Sihombing

USU02:

  • King Muliawan Makmur
  • Muhammad Shadiq
  • Vincentius Haholongan Tito Sihaloho
  • Kelly Cristo Iskandar

USU03:

  • Nathan Ryan Putra Sitompul
  • Yuni Harun Marsella
  • Bintang Aly Zacky
  • Bill Colson Wijaya

The event began with registration and cultural introduction activities, followed by a welcome dinner cruise attended by advisors, observers, and delegates. The next day marked the start of the main competition, where all teams participated in the preliminary round consisting of individual and team examinations. Out of 59 teams, only 20 advanced to the semifinals—and all three FK USU teams successfully progressed to this stage.

On the third day, the semifinal, final rounds, and closing ceremony were held. The semifinal round consisted of five sessions, with only the top five teams advancing to the final. During the semifinals, USU01 and USU03 briefly dominated the leaderboard. However, in the final session, their positions were overtaken by other teams. Ultimately, USU01 and USU03 secured positions in the top 15, while USU02 placed within the top 20.

In the Individual Award category, FK USU delegates achieved remarkable results, earning a total of six Silver Medals and two Bronze Medals. Silver medalists included Ruth Maria Situmorang, Nicholash Marcolius Sutanto, Tiffany Frolence, Nathan Ryan Putra Sitompul, Yuni Harun Marsella, and Bintang Aly Zacky. Meanwhile, Bill Colson Wijaya and Vincentius Haholongan Tito Sihaloho were awarded Bronze Medals.

The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, extends its highest appreciation and gratitude to the advisors, Prof. Dr. dr. Dewi Masyithah Darlan, DAP&E, MPH, Sp.Par(K), and Dr. dr. Sri Amelia, M.Kes., for their dedication, guidance, and exceptional commitment in preparing the delegation for SIMPIC 2026. Their academic support, motivation, and mentorship played a crucial role in shaping the students’ readiness, confidence, and performance throughout the competition.

Congratulations and appreciation are also extended to all FK USU delegates who have proudly represented the institution on the international stage. Their achievements, both in team performance and individual awards, reflect hard work, perseverance, and strong collaboration. It is hoped that this accomplishment will inspire other students to continue striving for excellence, developing their potential, and actively contributing to academic and professional fields.

The event concluded with a group photo session and the presentation of souvenirs from FK USU to the SIMPIC supervisor, Assoc. Prof. Pittaya Dankulchai, M.D., and the President of SIMPIC 2026, Khemjirath Hengswat.
