The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU), held an Entomology Workshop in collaboration with James Cook University—Australia, Universiti Malaya, and the National Research and Innovation Agency. This workshop focused on the morphological identification of mosquitoes and how to perform PCR related to mosquitoes. It was held for one full week from January 16-20, 2023.

Vice Dean for Cooperation, Research, and Community Service of FK USU, dr. Inke Nadia Diniyanti Lubis, M.Ked (Ped), Sp.A, Ph.D said this training was not only attended by lecturers and students of FK USU but also guests from 19 institutions involved in the ongoing research project between FK USU and Menzies School of Health Research, Australia. The project is entitled “Evaluating Zoonotic Malaria Transmission and Agriculture Land Use in Indonesia,” where this research involves various disciplines, including entomology.

This activity was facilitated by Dr. Wong Meng Li and Dr. Nantha Kumar Jeyaprakasam from Universiti Malaya, as well as Dr. Triwibowo Ambargarjito and Mr. Mujiyono from the Center for Research and Development of Vectors and Disease Reservoirs (B2V2PRP) Salatiga, National Research and Innovation Agency. The purpose of this activity is to build the capacity of practitioners who conduct mosquito identification directly in the field and in the laboratory.

In the future, all parties expect further collaboration to expand relations and knowledge, especially related to mosquito research. Research on mosquitoes certainly has great urgency due to the high number of malaria cases. The participants were very enthusiastic and gave a very positive impression. They said that the knowledge gained from this training was beyond their expectations. Thus, hopefully, this activity will be useful to all.
