Students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), won 3rd place in the Literature Review competition in the UMSU Faculty of Medicine Health Festival 2024 at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara on Monday (24/11/2024). The team consisted of Melchizedek Morsa Abadi Nababan and Nayla Zahirah.
Melkisedek and Nayla explained that the literature they discussed this time was about the application of health science in the strategy to fight diabetes mellitus in Indonesia. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that is increasing in prevalence around the world, including Indonesia. This disease occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin effectively, resulting in high blood sugar (glucose) levels in the body.
Nayla added that, in her opinion, the fight against diabetes mellitus in Indonesia requires a holistic approach based on health science. “From improving health education, routine screening, dietary management, to exercise, all these elements are interrelated and support efforts to overcome diabetes.”
He also gave tips to other students who want to participate in similar competitions. According to him, it is important to highlight the urgency of innovation and explain the methods used.
“Many underestimate the literature review method, even though there is a scientific approach to synthesize articles,” he concluded.
They also hope that with the implementation of integrated health science-based strategies, Indonesia will be able to reduce the burden of diabetes mellitus and improve people's quality of life.
