Taeniasis is a parasitic zoonotic disease caused by tapeworms belonging to the genus Taenia. Human taeniasis is still a significant health problems, especially in North Sumatera. The disease is closely related to the habit of eating raw or undercooked meat, defecating inappropriately, and contamination with live stocks. Taeniasis infections in humans are caused by Taenia saginata, Taenia solium, and Taenia asiatica. The species can be identified by molecular and DNA sequencing which not yet can be done in Department of Parasitology laboratory of USU Medical Faculty. Prof. Dr. dr. Dewi Masyithah Darlan, DAP&E, MPH, Sp. ParK was granted funding from International Mobility Staff (IMS) Program which aims to increase the capability of lecturer in Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) to pursue World Class University. Throughthis program, joint research was conducted with Professor Sako from Department of Parasitology of Asahikawa Medical University to study on molecular and DNA sequencing technology. This is also an initiation of collaboration between Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) and Asahikawa Medical University.
