Medan – The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU), has once again achieved a proud accomplishment through the success of several of its lecturers in obtaining patent certificates for research results and innovations they have developed. The patent certificates were awarded as part of the Patent Description Writing Training and Patent Substantive Completion Workshop organized by Universitas Sumatera Utara in collaboration with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI).
The activities took place on Tuesday–Wednesday, 23–24 June 2026, from 08:00 WIB until completion, at the Hall of the Directorate of Scientific Writing, Publication, and Publishing of Universitas Sumatera Utara. The event aimed to enhance the academic community’s understanding of preparing high-quality patent documents while accelerating the intellectual property protection process for research outputs with commercialization potential.
The success of FK USU lecturers in obtaining patent certificates serves as tangible evidence of the faculty’s commitment to encouraging research development that not only contributes to scientific advancement but also produces innovations with practical value and application potential for society. This achievement reflects the high quality of research conducted as well as the seriousness in protecting intellectual property rights for innovative works produced.

The FK USU lecturers who successfully obtained patent certificates are:
- Dr. dr. Imam Budi Putra, MHA, Sp.KK(K), FINSDV, FAADV through the innovation Nanoemulgel Preparation Containing Ethanol Extract of Soursop Seeds (Annona muricata L.) as a Sunscreen;
- Dr. dr. Rusdiana, M.Kes through the innovation 70% Ethanol Extract of Binahong Leaves (Anredera cordifolia) as an Herbal Medicine for Reducing Fatty Liver;
- Prof. dr. Tri Widyawati, M.Si., Ph.D through the innovation Formulation of Ethanol Extract of Edamame Seeds (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) and Methanol Extract of Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.) as a Nutritional Supplement in Wistar Rat Malnutrition Models;
- Dr. dr. Dina Arwina Dalimunthe, M.Ked(KK), Sp.DVE, Subsp.D.T, FINSDV, FAADV through the innovation Hydrogel Formulation with Toba Benzoin Extract (Styrax sumatranus) as a Topical Burn Treatment Preparation; and
- dr. Zulham, M.Biomed., Ph.D through the innovation Method for Producing and Formulating a 100 bp DNA Ladder Using the PCR Method from the Genome of Escherichia coli ATCC 25922.
These diverse innovations demonstrate the broad contributions of research conducted by FK USU’s academic community, ranging from the development of natural product-based health products, herbal therapies, nutrition, biomolecular technology, to wound treatment. In addition to strengthening the research ecosystem within the faculty, these innovations also have the potential to be further developed through commercialization processes, enabling them to provide tangible benefits to the healthcare sector and society.
The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, USU, expressed appreciation for the achievements of the lecturers who successfully obtained patent certificates. This accomplishment is expected to motivate the entire academic community to continue improving research quality, strengthening the culture of innovation, and producing works capable of addressing various health challenges in the future.
