The Department of Internal Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara sent a delegation to carry out a clinical observation program at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) Taiwan. This clinical observation program was carried out on the basis of cooperation between the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital. This activity was held for 3 weeks, starting from Monday (15/01/2024) to Friday (02/02/2024).

Dr. Dina Aprillia Ariestine, M.Ked (PD), Sp.PD, K.Ger is a representative of the Geriatrics division who went to Taiwan for this Clinical Observership Program. The geriatric population is an age group that is most vulnerable to various health problems. Various deteriorating conditions such as reduced vision, hearing, intelligence, and difficulty in performing daily activities such as dressing, bathing, and eating often occur. During the activity, Doctor Dina gained various exciting experiences for geriatric services in hospitals and communities. The differences in habits and customs between elderly patients in Taiwan and Indonesia do not make the conditions of elderly patients between the two countries much different. Two common complaints of elderly patients are often related to frailty and sarcopenia. With the use of more advanced medical equipment in Taiwan, the conditions of frailty and sarcopenia are more accessible to recognize.

Dr. Rahmad Isnanta, Sp.PD, KKV, represents the Cardiovascular Division of Internal Medicine. He was delegated to go to Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) in Taiwan to carry out clinical observation activities in the catheterization lab chaired by Dr. Tu, Chung-Ming. It was a great experience for him to observe PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) with OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), divided installation on LAA, peripheral vascular procedures such as arteriography and PTA, and venography with Dr. Tu Chung-Ming at FEMH.

The Clinical Observership Program provided a broader experience of holistic geriatric and cardiovascular care. The contribution of the Department of Internal Medicine in sending delegates to conduct clinical observations at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital is expected to improve learning and the quality of geriatric and cardiovascular patient care at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara and CPL Hospital, Universitas Sumatera Utara.
