Medan-USU: To build a region, especially North Sumatra, good teamwork is needed. Likewise with the Academic Community of the Universitas Sumatera Utara, if you want to build Universitas Sumatera Utara to be even better, you need good (teamwork) as well.

Such was the statement of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) General (Ret.) Luhut Binsar Panjaitan in a Public Lecture on the theme “Regional development based on law, politics and security.” The Lecture, held on Monday (07/25/16) at the USU Student Center building, ran smoothly and was attended by the entire academic community of Universitas Sumatera Utara.

Also attending the event were USU Rector Prof Dr Runtung SH MHum, USU Vice Rector II DR dr Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar MKed (OG) SpOG (K), Director of USU Graduate School Prof Robert Sibarani MS, Representatives of the North Sumatra Provincial Government, Members of the USU Board of Trustees, Members of the USU Academic Senate, Chair of the USU DGB, USU Alumni, and USU Postgraduate students.

In the public lecture, Luhut Panjaitan also explained the Development Efforts and Strategies currently being carried out by the Government, including Equitable Development, especially outside Java, Increasing competitiveness, and transforming industry-oriented commodities.

He revealed, “One example of the development strategy is by allocating funds for village development. According to available data, the allocation of development funds to each village in Indonesia tends to increase every year, in 2015 by 0.7 billion, 2016 by 1.2 billion, in 2017 is estimated at 1.7 billion and in 2018 is estimated at 2.3 billion.

The equalization of the allocation of the Village Development Fund also significantly impacts the poverty rate in each village. Of these funds, they can develop the village by building and developing the potential of the village or from the local wisdom that is owned, and according to President Jokowi, it is time for Equality not only in Java but also must be felt by every region and village in Indonesia, “said Luhut Panjaitan as the former Meko Polhukam RI.    

On this occasion, Luhut Panjaitan also mentioned Tax Amnesty, which is currently being programmed by the government. “The purpose of this tax amnesty is to collect a tax database to increase long-term tax revenue, increase taxes in 2016, and improve the taxation IT system. So that with the achievement of the objectives of Tax Amnesty, the government can regulate the reduction of tax rates as well as strengthening the enforcement of Tax Law,” said Luhut.

According to Luhut Panjaitan's definition, tax amnesty is the elimination of taxes that should be owed, not subject to tax administrative sanctions and criminal sanctions in the field of taxation, by revealing assets and paying ransom as stipulated in the law.

Meanwhile, the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara Prof. Dr. Runtung SH, M.Hum in his remarks at the opening session of the public lecture event expressed his gratitude to the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs for visiting and giving a Public Lecture at Universitas Sumatera Utara.

“On this occasion, we certainly as the leaders of Universitas Sumatera Utara would like to thank the Minister, even though in the midst of his busy schedule, the Minister can still take the time to give a public lecture which is an enlightenment for the entire Academic Community of the Universitas Sumatera Utara, and let us follow carefully so that later we can reap the maximum results from the Public Lecture given by the Minister,” said the Rector of USU.

Cabinet Reshuffle

Based on the information quoted on the page national.kompas.com, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, has held a cabinet reshuffle (cabinet reshuffle) volume II at the State Palace Complex Jakarta. Through a press conference (27/7/2016), which was also attended by Vice President Jusuf Kalla, ministers, and ministerial candidates, as many as 13 ministers have been selected by the President of Indonesia, and one of them is General (Ret.) Luhut Binsar Panjaitan who is currently the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs. Meanwhile, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs is General (ret.) Wiranto.
