A student of the Subspecialist Program (Sp2) in Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU), dr. Herman Syahputra Nasution, SpB, achieved an award as the winner in the E-Poster Case Report category at the 29th Annual Scientific Meeting (PIT) of the Indonesian Association of Surgical Oncologists (PERABOI) 2026.

The scientific activity organized by the Indonesian Association of Surgical Oncologists (PERABOI) was held on October 1–3, 2026, in Bandar Lampung. During the event, dr. Herman Syahputra Nasution, Sp. B, presented a scientific paper entitled “Reliable Soft Tissue Coverage in Complex Head and Neck Cancer Surgery: A Case Series of PMMC Flap Reconstruction.”

The paper discussed the use of the pectoralis major myocutaneous (PMMC) flap as one of the reconstruction methods to achieve reliable soft tissue coverage in complex cases in the field of head and neck cancer surgery. The presentation in the case report category formed part of the student's contribution to a scientific forum discussing developments in oncological surgery knowledge and practice.

This achievement also reflects the commitment of FK USU to developing medical education based on mastery of knowledge, research, and the development of students' clinical competencies. This is in line with the vision of FK USU to become a quality and leading medical education institution and move toward becoming a center of excellence in tropical medicine and preventive oncology at the Southeast Asian level.

The participation and achievement of students in national scientific forums also support FK USU's contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, through the development of knowledge and competencies in healthcare services, including the management of head and neck malignancy cases.

On the other hand, this activity supports SDG 4: Quality Education through strengthening higher medical education, developing academic and research skills, and involving students in scientific forums as part of a continuous learning process.

Through the development of education, research, and professional competencies, FK USU continues to encourage the development of medical human resources capable of contributing to improving the quality of public health while supporting sustainable development at the national and regional levels.
