Rabu (20/8/2025) - The USU Auditorium, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) reaffirmed its role as a center for global scientific development and innovation through a scientific speech emphasizing the importance of health as the foundation for sustainable development by dr. Inke Nadia Diniyanti Lubis, PGDip PID, M.Ked(Ped)., Sp.A., Ph.D, as the Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Medicine at USU, had the opportunity to deliver the scientific lecture. This scientific lecture was part of the series of events for the 73rd Anniversary of USU.
In her speech, dr. Inke Nadia D. Lubis said that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are not just a global agenda, but a joint pledge by humanity to end poverty, protect the earth, and ensure prosperity for all. Health is seen as a reflection of civilization, which is the basis for achieving development in economy, education, environment, and equality.
“Health is not only a clinical matter in hospitals, but also reflects civilization, science, and human courage to find solutions for a better life,” she said.
History shows a surge in the life expectancy of Indonesians from 42 years in 1945 to 71 years in 2025 thanks to advances in research, drug discoveries, antibiotics, and vaccines. This proves that innovation is born from courage, collaboration, and curiosity.
Zoonotic diseases, which currently account for 60% of infectious diseases in humans, are one of the global threats that need to be addressed through the One Health approach—a concept that emphasizes the interconnectedness between humans, animals, and the environment.
USU itself has proven its contribution through malaria research that has impacted national policy, the establishment of a COVID-19 laboratory, the implementation of mass vaccination, the development of the first telemedicine service in Indonesia, and leadership in efforts to overcome antimicrobial resistance in Southeast Asia.
The speech concluded with an inspiring message for students: to always have curiosity, courage, a spirit of collaboration, and concern for humanity.
