“The Integrated Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara continues to improve the quality of its services and the capacity of its facilities. We are committed to developing this laboratory as a supporting center for academic and research activities capable of producing various innovations in the health sector,” explained dr. Dedi Ardinata.
The Secretary and members of the Board of Trustees of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) conducted a working visit to the Faculty of Medicine to directly review the development of the Integrated Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine on Thursday, 05 March 2026, at the Faculty of Medicine USU.
The delegation from the Board of Trustees was welcomed by the leadership of the Faculty of Medicine along with the management of the Integrated Laboratory. Prior to touring the laboratory facilities, the meeting began with an opening session led directly by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, followed by a presentation on the achievements and ongoing development processes delivered by the Head of the Integrated Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine USU.
In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine explained that the Integrated Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine USU has experienced significant development over the past few years. Furthermore, the Dean expressed hope that in the future the Integrated Laboratory will have its own integrated building so that the management and development of laboratory facilities can be carried out more optimally.
“In the future, we hope that the Integrated Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine USU can be developed within a dedicated integrated building. This would enable various research activities, laboratory testing, and laboratory-based health services to be carried out more effectively and provide broader benefits to the community,” he added.
This was followed by remarks from the Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Tamrin, who stated that Universitas Sumatera Utara is one of the state universities in Indonesia that has obtained the status of a Legal Entity State University. In the Sumatra region, USU is the only university that has received this status and currently ranks sixth at the national level. This status provides greater autonomy for the university in managing its resources independently, including the development of educational and research facilities.
In an effort to improve the quality of research facilities, the Board of Trustees of USU is currently conducting reviews of several accredited laboratories, particularly during the initial stage of developing the Integrated Laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine. The review aims to evaluate several important aspects, including the balance of the laboratory’s financial system, particularly the comparison between annual expenditures and revenues to ensure stability and sustainability. In addition, the Board of Trustees is also assessing the availability of human resources, the condition and feasibility of laboratory equipment, as well as the need for equipment replacement or additional instruments to support research activities.
The Secretary of the Board of Trustees explained that this review process also opens opportunities for strengthening collaborative networks in the development of laboratory facilities, either through networks owned by the Board of Trustees or through research grant programs.
“The Board of Trustees is currently reviewing accredited laboratories as an initial evaluation stage. We are examining various aspects, ranging from the balance of the financial system—between laboratory expenditures and revenues each year—to the availability of human resources and the condition of laboratory equipment. If there are instruments that are no longer suitable for use, they will need to be replaced. Meanwhile, if there are still deficiencies, additional equipment can be pursued through the networks of the Board of Trustees or through research grants,” he stated.
Furthermore, he emphasized that strengthening the integrated laboratory facilities at the Faculty of Medicine is expected to serve as a benchmark for research development capable of competing at both national and international levels. Improving laboratory quality is also expected to support the achievement of higher accreditation standards.
The Head of the Integrated Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine USU, Dedi Ardinata, in the same occasion explained that during the 2024–2025 period, the laboratory has implemented various facility improvements, including the addition and optimization of laboratory equipment to support practicum activities, research conducted by lecturers and students, as well as laboratory examination services.
“The Integrated Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine USU continues to improve the quality of its services and the capacity of its facilities. We are committed to making this laboratory a supporting center for academic and research activities capable of generating innovations in the health sector,” explained dr. Dedi Ardinata.
He also added that the existence of the Integrated Laboratory is expected not only to function as a facility for education and research but also to provide services that benefit the wider community.
As the closing of the activity, members of the Board of Trustees conducted a direct visit to several laboratory units within the Faculty of Medicine. During the visit, the delegation observed the condition of laboratory facilities, evaluated the feasibility of the equipment being used, and engaged in discussions with laboratory managers regarding operational matters and future development needs.
Through this visit, it is expected that the synergy between the university leadership and the faculty will further strengthen the development of laboratory facilities at the Faculty of Medicine USU. In the future, the Integrated Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine USU is expected to become an excellent center for research and health services that contributes significantly to the advancement of scientific knowledge and the improvement of public health.
