The PREPARE Regional RESPIRO Investigator Meeting and Workshop on Metagenomic Sequencing of Respiratory Viruses aims to bring together all RESPIRO research sites from six countries (Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam) in a forum for discussion on study progress, sharing best practices, training on protocol implementation, and discussing technical issues encountered in the implementation of research.
Singapore, May 14–21, 2025 – The Faculty of Medicine at USU is participating in a series of international activities organized by The Programme for Research in Epidemic Preparedness and Response (PREPARE), a national program established by the Singapore Ministry of Health to strengthen research capacity, translation platforms, and expertise in the development of tools, methods, and products that can be used to detect, respond to, and control future infectious disease threats.
As part of efforts to strengthen regional research networks, PREPARE, through the Regional Networks Co-Operative, is hosting the PREPARE Regional RESPIRO Investigator Meeting (IM) on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, in Singapore. This event aims to bring together all RESPIRO research sites from six countries—Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam—in a discussion forum on study progress, sharing best practices, protocol implementation training, and addressing technical issues encountered during research implementation.
Following this event, a seven-day Workshop on Metagenomic Sequencing of Respiratory Viruses was held from May 15 to 21, 2025, at Duke-NUS Academia in Singapore. Seventy participants from six countries attended the workshop, which was organized by PREPARE, the Pasteur Institute of Cambodia, and the Asia Pathogen Genomics Initiative (Asia PGI) in collaboration with Duke-NUS Medical School.
The workshop's primary focus was strengthening metagenomic sequencing capabilities for infectious disease surveillance, particularly respiratory viruses, in Asian countries with limited resources. This activity is part of the ENIGMA initiative (Enhancing INfectious disease Genomic capabilities in lower resource countries through Metagenomic Analysis), which aims to enhance regional preparedness in addressing infectious disease threats through a genomics-based approach.
The Faculty of Medicine at the University of North Sumatra sent a team led by Dr. Inke Nadia Diniyanti Lubis, PGDip PID, M.Ked(Ped), Sp.A., Ph.D and Dr. Bastian Lubis, M.Ked(An)., Sp.An., KIC, with the following members:
Prof. Dr. Bintang Y Magdalena, M.Med(Pulmonology), Sp.P(K)
Dr. Ananda Wibawa Ginting, Sp.PD, K-P
Dr. Ranti Permatasari, Sp.PK(K)
Dr. R Lia Kusumawati, Sp.MK(K)
Dr. R Andika Dwi Cahyadi, M.Ked(An)
Dr. Rizkia Pratiwi
Edy Wiranto, S.Si, M.Biomed
The team's participation reflects the institution's commitment to expanding cross-border research collaboration and strengthening scientific capacity in infectious diseases and genomic epidemiology. This involvement is hoped to contribute to developing surveillance and response systems for infectious diseases at the national and regional levels.
