History

1957

Universitas Sumatera Utara was established on November 20, 1957. Initially, this university only consisted of 3 faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Science. Subsequently, the Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Economics, and the Faculty of Dentistry were established in 1958, 1959, and 1961 respectively. The Faculty of Literature (1964), the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (1965), the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (1983), and the Faculty of Public Health (1993) followed.

1996

Seeing the development of the Faculty of Medicine and other faculties related to biomedical science, such as the Faculty of Dentistry, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (especially the departments of pharmacy, chemistry, biology, and biochemistry), and the Faculty of Public Health, it was deemed necessary to open a Biomedical Science Study Program in the USU postgraduate program. In addition, graduates of the Biomedical Science Study Program are also very much needed in the industrial and health world. Based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 520/DIKTI/Kep/1996 dated November 12, 1996, the Biomedical Science Study Program began accepting students in 1997 with three fields of specialization, namely pharmacology, biochemistry, and physiology. Along with the demand and needs in 2003, another field of specialization was opened, which is anatomy.

2009

The Biomedical Science Study Program, which has been under the USU Postgraduate School since its establishment, officially came under the USU Faculty of Medicine in 2009, with its office as well as teaching and learning venues in the Abdul Hakim Building of the USU Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Street, USU Complex, Medan.
