Specialist Medical Education Program (Sp-1)

The Specialist-1 Program in Orthopaedics and Traumatology of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a study program that studies specialized medical skills focusing on teaching orthopedics and traumatology, designed to produce graduates who are competent in diagnosing and treating various injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. With an A accreditation, the cooperation between this program and orthopedic and traumatology education centers in Indonesia and abroad makes graduates of this specialist program possess a high work ethic and professionalism in diagnosing, managing, and treating injuries caused by sports or physical activities.

Graduate Profile

The following is a list of graduate profiles found in Specialist-1 Program in Orthopedics and Traumatology

Graduates of this study program can work as orthopedic specialists in general and specialty hospitals. They are responsible for diagnosing, treating, and performing surgery on patients with musculoskeletal disorders and injuries, such as fractures, arthritis, and bone deformities.

As orthopedic consultants, graduates can either open their practice or work in specialist orthopedic clinics offering consultation, diagnosis, and surgical or non-surgical treatment for patients with bone and joint problems.

Some graduates choose to become lecturers or researchers in medical faculties or research institutions. They will be assigned to teach medical students, guide research, and contribute to developing orthopedic science through scientific publications and research projects.

Graduates can work in rehabilitation centers, focusing on restoring musculoskeletal function, post-operative rehabilitation, and improving the quality of life of patients after orthopedic surgery.

Graduates of this course may join international health organizations or humanitarian missions, providing orthopedic services in areas that lack medical facilities. They are expected to handle complex orthopedic cases in resource-limited environments.

Clinical researchers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies will develop and test new drugs or medical devices related to orthopedic care, ensuring product safety and effectiveness.

Graduates can also work in trauma centers, handling emergency cases involving severe musculoskeletal injuries such as multiple fractures or soft tissue injuries. They provide emergency and surgical care for trauma patients, helping to restore function and mobility.

Graduates may specialize in pediatric orthopedics, treating children with musculoskeletal conditions such as congenital deformities, growth abnormalities, and injuries. They work in pediatric hospitals or specialized clinics.
