The Surgical Subspecialist Program of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, aims to become a center for education, service, and development of surgical subspecialists who are superior, leading, and dignified in Indonesia in 2030. Producing oncology surgery subspecialists who can compete globally, especially in minimally invasive head and neck surgery and oncoplasty. Producing digestive surgery subspecialists who can plan, implement, and perform post-liver transplantation care.

Graduate Profile

The following is a list of graduate profiles found in Specialist-2 Program in Surgery

As surgeons, graduates of this study program can work as surgeons in leading hospitals, both in the public and private sectors. They will be responsible for performing various types of surgeries, ranging from general surgeries to specialists such as cardiac surgery, orthopedic surgery, and oncology surgery.

As teaching staff, graduates of this study program can become lecturers or instructors in medical education institutions. They will be assigned to teach courses related to their field, guide student research, and engage in academic research. In addition, they can also supervise clinical activities and surgical practicums.

As consultant surgeons in private clinics, graduates will work with patients with complex surgical cases that require specialized care. They may also provide advice and input to general practitioners or other specialized doctors on handling surgical patients.

Graduates who have a special interest in minimally invasive surgery can pursue a career as a laparoscopic or endoscopic surgeon. They will perform surgical procedures using laparoscopic or endoscopic techniques to reduce patient trauma and recovery time.

Some graduates may choose to become oncology surgeons who focus on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancer. They will perform tumor resection, lymphadenectomy, and other surgical procedures as part of the patient's cancer treatment.

Graduates interested in the management of acute injuries and trauma can work as trauma surgeons, where they will manage patients with serious injuries such as bone fractures, burns, and internal injuries.

Some graduates may pursue a career as pediatric surgeons, focusing on the management of pediatric patients with surgical conditions such as hernias, congenital malformations, and gastrointestinal diseases.

Graduates can also become researchers in surgical science and engage in scientific research to improve surgical techniques, patient outcomes, and new surgical therapies. They will contribute to scientific knowledge and innovation in the surgical field.
