The Indonesian Independent Accreditation Institute for Higher Education in Health (LAM-PTKes) conducted an on-site assessment visit for the accreditation of the Subspecialist Education Program (Sp-2) in Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU). The series of activities officially began on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the third-floor Hall of FK USU and marked an important stage in the quality assurance process and development of subspecialist medical education at FK USU.
The visit served as an opportunity to evaluate various aspects of the study program’s implementation while strengthening FK USU’s readiness to produce highly competent graduates in pulmonology and respiratory medicine. The assessment also provided an opportunity to evaluate governance, curriculum, human resources, facilities and infrastructure, research, and support from teaching hospitals.
USU Rector, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., emphasized the importance of strengthening laboratory facilities and infrastructure to support the quality of education and research. The provision of medical tools in the Integrated Laboratory is among the priorities in the development of educational and research facilities.
“In addition to supporting education and research activities, the development of this central research laboratory is also intended to generate additional revenue through revenue sharing for the university,” explained the Rector.
The strengthening of educational and research facilities is in line with SDG 4: Quality Education, particularly in providing a high-quality learning environment and educational facilities that support the development of learners’ competencies. Increased laboratory capacity is also expected to strengthen the research ecosystem at FK USU.
Meanwhile, Director of Human Resources, Education, and Research at H. Adam Malik General Hospital, dr. Faisal Habib, Sp.JP(K), FIHA, FAPSC, stated that pulmonology and respiratory services are among the hospital’s leading services. He explained that FK USU and the hospital have coordinated and established partnerships with several partner hospitals serving as Satellite Hospitals to ensure sufficient case variety and exposure for students.
The availability of diverse clinical cases and the strengthening of the teaching hospital network are essential to supporting students’ clinical learning experiences. These efforts also contribute to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by improving the quality of health professional education, which is ultimately expected to strengthen healthcare service capacity, particularly in pulmonology and respiratory medicine.
“FK USU and the hospital have also coordinated and established partnerships with several partner hospitals as Satellite Hospitals to ensure sufficient case variety for the students,” said dr. Faisal.
The Chair of the LAM-PTKes Assessment Team, Prof. dr. Wiwien Heru Wiyono, PhD, Sp.P(K), expressed appreciation for the synergy between faculty leadership and hospital management in supporting the implementation of the Subspecialist Education Program (Sp-2) in Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine.
“This synergy is a key foundation for the implementation of a subspecialist program so that it can continue to develop and produce pulmonology and respiratory medicine specialists who are reliable, excellent, and prepared to support healthcare services in Indonesia,” he said.
Through this accreditation visit, FK USU continues to strengthen its commitment to improving the quality of subspecialist medical education, enhancing facilities and infrastructure, and developing sustainable clinical and academic networks to produce excellent graduates capable of making meaningful contributions to improving public health.
