“The Faculty of Medicine is not just a place to study theory, but also a place to build character, discipline, and empathy toward others. We hope this visit becomes an inspiration for the students,” said dr. Hidayat.
The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU) welcomed a visit from students of Yayasan Pendidikan Harapan - SMA Harapan 3 on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the 3rd Floor Hall of the Faculty of Medicine. The visit aimed to introduce the world of medical education to students at an early stage while providing them with a real insight into the learning process within a medical campus environment.
The group was warmly received by dr. Zulham, M.Biomed., Ph.D, Permanent Coordinator for Academic, Student Affairs, and Alumni, who also serves as Head of the Department of Histology, along with dr. Hidayat, M.Biomed, Expert Staff to the Vice Dean III for Information Technology, and Enni Susianti, SP., M.Si, Head of Administration. In his remarks, dr. Zulham expressed his appreciation for the visit and hoped that activities like this would inspire students to pursue higher education, especially in the field of health sciences.
“We are delighted to share our experiences with students from SMA Harapan 3 Medan. Hopefully, this visit broadens your understanding of the medical world and strengthens your aspirations to become competent medical professionals in the future,” said dr. Zulham. He also shared the historical background of the Faculty, including the number of lecturers and students during its early years, and explained the procedures for admission to the Faculty of Medicine.
Meanwhile, dr. Hidayat added that introducing students to the academic environment of a university is an essential step in shaping their educational direction and ambitions. “The Faculty of Medicine is not just a place to study theory, but also a place to build character, discipline, and empathy toward others. We hope this visit becomes an inspiration for the students,” he stated.
Teachers from SMA Harapan 3 Medan expressed their gratitude to the Faculty of Medicine, USU, for the warm welcome and the opportunity given to learn directly on campus. Interestingly, based on the school’s internal survey, around 80% of the visiting students expressed interest in continuing their studies at the Faculty of Medicine, USU. This reflects the students’ strong enthusiasm and the Faculty’s solid reputation as a leading medical education institution in North Sumatra. During the visit, students toured various campus facilities that serve as centers of academic activity for medical students. In the Computer Laboratory, they were introduced to digital-based learning systems used for study and computer-based examinations (UTBK).
Next, in the Skills Lab, students observed firsthand how medical students practice basic clinical skills using mannequins and medical simulation tools. Demonstrations included checking vital signs, inserting IVs, and doctor-patient communication techniques. The tour continued to the Anatomy Laboratory, where students learned about human body structures through complete skeletal models, organ specimens, and cadavers used in real anatomy learning. With guidance from accompanying lecturers, students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of anatomy as a foundation in medical education.
Through this activity, it is hoped that students gained valuable experiences and a deeper appreciation of how future doctors are trained through rigorous medical education. The Faculty of Medicine, USU, remains committed to providing educational opportunities for schools wishing to learn more about the world of medicine and health sciences.
