Three academics from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU), were once again inaugurated as Permanent Professors of Universitas Sumatera Utara in an academic ceremony held at the USU Student Center on Monday, 17 February 2025.
The three FK USU academics inaugurated as Permanent Professors of Universitas Sumatera Utara were:
- Prof. Dr. dr. Bintang Yinke Magdalena Sinaga, M.Ked (Paru), Sp.P(K)
- Prof. Dr. dr. Julandi Harahap, MA, FISPH, FISCM, M.Kal
- Prof. Dr. dr. Kamal Basri Siregar, M.Ked (Surg), Sp.B Subsp.Onk(K), FICS, M.H.Kes
Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara, stated that the inauguration was part of USU’s long-standing journey in building a stronger academic ecosystem. He also emphasized that the role of a professor extends beyond the classroom, including providing broader insights and contributions to society.
The inauguration serves as tangible evidence of USU’s contribution to the advancement of knowledge and technology, particularly in the field of health sciences. Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin stated that this achievement reflects the quality of human resources developed by USU.
During the scientific speeches, each professor presented research findings and ideas related to their respective fields of expertise. Prof. Dr. dr. Bintang began with a speech entitled “Tuberculosis Preventive Therapy in Latent Tuberculosis Infection: Challenges and Solutions Toward Tuberculosis Elimination in Indonesia.” This was followed by Prof. Dr. dr. Julandi, who discussed “Optimizing Reproductive Health as a Strategy for Stunting Prevention: A Holistic Approach for a Quality Generation.” The session concluded with Prof. Dr. dr. Kamal, who presented “Liquid Biopsy as a Revolutionary Innovation in the Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Future Therapeutic Approaches to Cancer.”
The three scientific speeches demonstrated the contributions of FK USU academics to the advancement of health sciences through research and innovation, particularly in tuberculosis prevention and elimination, reproductive health improvement and stunting prevention, as well as the development of innovative approaches to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The inauguration was not merely a ceremonial occasion but also symbolized the significant responsibility of academics to continue contributing to education and research. With the addition of new professors, USU further strengthens its position as an excellent and highly competitive university, both nationally and internationally.
The inauguration of the professors aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, through strengthening academic capacity, advancing knowledge, and enhancing the contribution of educators to quality, research-based education.
Furthermore, the research areas presented in the scientific speeches also support SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, particularly through efforts to eliminate tuberculosis, improve reproductive health and prevent stunting, as well as develop innovations in cancer diagnosis and treatment to improve public health outcomes.
