The Specialist-1 Program in Neurosurgery of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a study program that studies special medical skills that focus on teaching neurosurgery with systematic analytical learning methods and evidence-based medicine to provide fundamental and comprehensive neurosurgical science education that can support sustainable education.
TheSpecialist-1 Program in Neurosurgery of USU includes a group of the best individuals who are highly committed to producing neurosurgeon candidates who are skilled in solving neurosurgical problems and providing counseling actions in the preventive, curative, and rehabilitative fields, as well as have integrity under Pancasila and the code of scientific ethics and professional ethics. Doctors who have completed this study program will hold the Neurosurgery Specialist (Sp.B.S.) degree.
History
1983
In 1983, to fill the vacancy of neurosurgeons in Medan, at the request of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (who at that time was Prof. Dr. Bachtiar Fanany Lubis) to the head of the Neurosurgery section of FK Unpad, dr. Abdul Gofar Sastrodiningrat, who had just completed his education as a neurosurgeon at FK Unpad at that time, was transferred to Medan to become a neurosurgeon in the Surgical Sciences section of FK USU in September 1983. With the presence of neurosurgeons, in 1984, on the initiative of the head of the USU Faculty of Medicine Surgery section, Prof. dr. Buchari Kasim, a plastic surgeon, a Neurosurgery sub-section was formed under the USU Faculty of Medicine Surgery Section.
1985
Furthermore, in 1985 through the decree of the Governor of North Sumatra, Kaharudin Nasution, the Neurosurgery Service Unit of Dr. Pirngadi Medan Hospital was also established, where dr. Abdul Gofar Sastrodiningrat was appointed as the head of the unit. This was a historic event where Neurosurgery got an 'institutional' platform both at FK USU and at the teaching hospital, Dr. Pirngadi Hospital.
1986
In 1986, dr. Iskandar Japardi, Sp.B.S., a graduate of Universitas Padjajaran, Bandung, and dr. Adril Arsjad Hakim, Sp.S., Sp.B.S., a graduate of Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, arrived.
1991
In 1991, the construction of H. Adam Malik Central General Hospital was completed and inaugurated as a 'teaching hospital', while Dr. Pirngadi Hospital became a 'hospital for education'. dr. Adril Arsyad Hakim, Sp.S., Sp.B.S. was appointed as Head of the Neurosurgery Functional Medical Staff at H. Adam Malik General Hospital, while dr. Abdul Gofar Sastrodiningrat, Sp.B.S. and dr. Iskandar Japardi, Sp.B.S. remained at Dr. Pirngadi Hospital.
1995
In 1995, dr. Abdul Gofar Sastrodiningrat, Sp.B.S. moved to H. Adam Malik Hospital as Head of the Neurosurgery Division under the Department of Surgery, while Prof. Dr. Iskandar Japardi, Sp.B.S. was appointed as Head of the Neurosurgery Functional Medical Staff at Dr. Pirngadi Hospital.
2004
The quality and capability of services at H. Adam Malik Central General Hospital have increased over time. In early 2004, H. Adam Malik Central General Hospital was recorded as the hospital with the most cases of head trauma, possibly reaching 80% of the head trauma cases that occurred in Medan and surrounding areas. Other cases included microsurgery for brain tumors and spinal cord tumors.
2005
Then, in 2005, Prof. Dr. dr. Iskandar Japardi, Sp.B.S. Joined the Neurosurgery Division of the FK USU Department of Surgery/H. Adam Malik Central General Hospital; as head of the Neurosurgery SMF of Dr. Pirngadi Hospital, appointed Dr. Rezeki Sembiring, Sp.B.S., who was then appointed as an extraordinary lecturer at the Neurosurgery Division of the FK USU Department of Surgery/H. Adam Malik Central General Hospital.
2006
With the existence of four neurosurgeons in the neurosurgery institution of the USU Faculty of Medicine, there is also an educational field with quite varied cases. Meanwhile, the army hospital, Putri Hijau Hospital, also had a neurosurgeon, Dr. Bayu, Sp.B.S.; the idea of establishing a neurosurgery education center at the USU Faculty of Medicine arose. With very strong moral support from the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara at that time, Prof. dr. Chaeruddin P. Lubis, DTMH, Sp.A(K), and the Dean of the USU Faculty of Medicine, Prof. dr. Gontar A. Siregar, Sp.PD-KGEH, in mid-2006, a proposal was made to establish the FK USU Neurosurgery Specialist Medical Education Institution.
Unlike the three existing Neurosurgery Specialist Medical Education Institutions (IPDS) at FK UI, FK UNPAD, and FK Unair; the USU Neurosurgery IPDS was born in the era after the enactment of the Medical Practice Law No. 29 of 2005, in which the requirements for the establishment of the IPDS were different. 29 of 2005, where the requirements for the establishment of an educational institution have been regulated through regulations of the Indonesian Medical Council and regulations of the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Ministry of National Education, which are quite detailed, including requirements for the number of human resources, educational facilities, and infrastructure, the number of cases, and the existence of supporting sciences, so it takes a long time to make improvements to the proposal along with the physical preparation of facilities and infrastructure.
In preparing the physical educational facilities, the services of Dr. dr. Iskandar Japardi, Sp.B.S., who persistently approached the leadership of H. Adam Malik Hospital to obtain the location of the office and ward successfully. The office space consists of administration, meeting, lecture, department head, and study program head rooms. Office space is equipped with wallpaper, air conditioning, computers in each work room and duty room, LCD Projector, internet connection, and furniture, such as tables, chairs, and bookcases. Most of these preparations were privately funded.
Neurosurgery textbooks to fill the Neurosurgery Library were also procured through various means. Some donated their personal property, some bought books with their own money and some were downloaded from the internet. In addition, the concept of collaboration with other disciplines was developed, especially with the Neurology Department, Radiology Department, and Anatomical Pathology Department.
2007
While preparations were in progress, in 2007, came newly graduated neurosurgeons dr. Ridha Dharmajaya, Sp.B.S., graduated from Universitas Indonesia, dr. Suzy Indharty, M.Kes., Sp.B.S., graduated from Universitas Padjajaran, and dr. Mahyudanil, Sp.B.S. graduated from Universitas Airlangga.
2008
In August 2008, a 'visitation' team came consisting of Prof. dr. Biran Affandi, Sp.O.G., chairman of the Indonesian Medical Legion Council, Prof. Dr. R. M. Padmosantjojo, Sp.B.S., chairman of the Indonesian Neurosurgery Collegium and dr. Setyo Widi Nugroho, Sp.B.S., member of the Indonesian Neurosurgery Collegium. The result of the visitation was the issuance of a letter to the Indonesian Medical Council and the Director General of Higher Education of the Department of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia which recommended the opening of a Neurosurgery Specialist Doctor Study Program at the Universitas Sumatera Utara Faculty of Medicine.
In November 2008, the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Department of National Education granted permission to establish a Specialist Doctor Education Program at the Universitas Sumatera Utara Faculty of Medicine. This is the fourth neurosurgery education center in Indonesia and the first neurosurgery education center outside Java.
On December 3, 2008, the Decree of the Rector of USU No. 2115/H5.1.R/SK/SDM/2008, the organizational structure of the FK USU Department of Neurosurgery was determined as follows:
1. Prof. Dr. dr. Iskandar Japardi, Sp.B.S(K) - Head of the Department/Educator
