Specialist Medical Education Program (Sp-1)

The Specialist Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) studies the science and art of pregnancy preparation or those related to midwifery, encompassing fetomaternal, fertility, and gynecology. With an accreditation of Very Good (A), this study program is one of the best midwifery education institutions in North Sumatra.

Staffed with qualified and dedicated education personnel to advance students' hopes to become expert midwives and health workers who prioritize skills, knowledge, good ethics, and empathy in order to improve the health of children and pregnant women in Indonesia and globally. Students who have completed this study program will hold the Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist (Sp.O.G.) degree.

History

1952

The Universitas Sumatera Utara Faculty of Medicine was established in 1952, along with the inception of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department.

1957–1961

From 1957–1961, this department had only one expert, namely Professor Tan Oen Siang. He was the founder of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Universitas Sumatera Utara Faculty of Medicine, which had only two residents then.

1972

As time passed, in 1972, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Universitas Sumatera Utara Faculty of Medicine was first led by Doctor Muhammad Yusuf Hanafiah. At that time, the department had 16 staff members and 12 residents, with all educational and service activities carried out at Dr. Pirngadi Regional General Hospital, Medan, which served as the provincial referral hospital at that time. Several activities related to education and services in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, such as inpatient care, outpatient care, consultations in the antenatal polyclinic, gynecological services, family planning, as well as surgical procedures and cases of oncology, were also conducted at that time.
