Specialist Medical Education Program (Sp-1)

The Specialist Program in Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a provider of specialist medical education for the upper organs around the head or specifically studying all kinds of medical conditions related to organs such as the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck. This study program focuses on mastering knowledge in anatomical pathology, radiology, anesthesia, and other sciences related to ear, nose, throat, head, and neck diseases.

This study program has professional and skilled teaching staff, producing graduates who are spread across various cities throughout Indonesia as professionals, researchers, and educators with the scope of otology, rhinology, larynx pharynx, and six other subfields available in this study program. Students who have completed this study program will hold the Otorhinolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery Specialist (Sp.T.H.T.B.K.L.) degree.

History

1955

The Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Study Program of FK USU began in 1955 with Prof. dr. Adenan Adenin as its pioneer. He was the first otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery specialist in North Sumatra who graduated from the Universitas Indonesia Faculty of Medicine. He was then trusted to open an otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery specialist education program by accepting a number of residents, namely dr. Erwin Tobing, dr. Asroel Aboet, dr. Ramsi Lutan, dr. Basyrulsyah, and dr. Rizal Basrah.

1960

In the mid-1960s to the 1970s, the USU Faculty of Medicine actively provided learning opportunities for the FK USU Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery to pursue education abroad to gain inter-university knowledge transfer. Some of these included Universität Wien in Vienna, Austria, and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Nederlands Kanker Instituut in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

1980

On March 10, 1980, with a Decree from the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 076/U/1980, the Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Department was officially established at Pirngadi Medan Hospital which became the main teaching hospital.

1999

In 1999, Haji Adam Malik Central General Hospital Medan was established and became the main teaching hospital to date. Over time, the Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Department has been led by several experienced teachers, including Prof. dr. Adenan Adenin, Prof. dr. Rizal Basrah, Dr. Erwin Tobing, Dr. Asroel Aboet, Prof. dr. Ramsi Lutan, Prof. dr. Askar Aboet, Prof. dr. Abdul Rahman, Prof. dr. T. Siti Hajar Haryuna, and Dr. dr. Andrina Yunita Murni Rambe.

Now

To date, the FK USU Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Study Program has produced graduates who are spread from Sabang to Merauke. Efforts to rejuvenate facilities in the learning process, apply the latest technology in the medical world, and organize various activities, such as courses and workshops, are routinely carried out, all aimed at achieving the vision and mission of the Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Study Program.
