Specialist Medical Education Program (Sp-1)

The Specialist-1 Program in Anatomical Pathology of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a study program that focuses on the study and understanding of diseases based on structural and cellular changes in human body tissues. Students of this program will learn various laboratory techniques to diagnose diseases through microscopic examination and understand the basic principles in interpreting pathology results.

Graduate Profile

The following is a list of graduate profiles found in Specialist-1 Program in Anatomical Pathology

Graduates can work as pathologists in general or specialized hospitals. They analyze tissue and cell samples, provide histopathology diagnoses, and assist in patient treatment planning.

As a pathology consultant in a diagnostic laboratory, they will lead the laboratory team, ensure the quality and accuracy of test results, and provide diagnostic consultation to clinical doctors who need to interpret pathology results.

Some graduates choose to become researchers or lecturers in educational or research institutions. They will teach medical students, conduct scientific research in the field of anatomic pathology, and contribute to discoveries and the development of improved diagnostic methods.

Graduates can also work as forensic pathologists, assisting in investigating suspicious or unnatural deaths. They will perform autopsies, analyze forensic evidence, and provide expert testimony in court to aid in legal proceedings.

With advances in genetic technology, graduates can work in molecular pathology, using molecular and genetic techniques to diagnose diseases, identify genetic mutations, and provide information that can help develop targeted therapies.

Graduates of this course can also work in cancer centers focusing on the diagnosis and classification of different types of cancer. They will work closely with the oncology team to plan and evaluate the treatment of cancer patients and contribute to cancer research.
