History

2001

In 2001, the Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine of the Universitas Sumatera Utara Faculty of Medicine (FK USU) was established, making it the third oldest cardiovascular medicine education center in Indonesia after Universitas Indonesia (UI) and Universitas Airlangga (Unair) and became the first cardiovascular specialist education center outside of Java. Initially, the Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine of FK USU collaborated with the Cardiology Section of FK UI as a guardian in carrying out the education process for cardiovascular specialists, where students still underwent part of the education process at Harapan Kita Hospital in Jakarta. As the education process progressed smoothly and there was a high interest from prospective students, the Collegium of Cardiovascular granted permission for the Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine of FK USU to become a category I/Independent cardiovascular specialist education center.

2008

In 2008, the Indonesian Medical Council and the Director General of Higher Education gave permission for FK USU to independently conduct the cardiovascular specialist education program.

2012-2017

Throughout its journey, the Cardiovascular Disease Study Program of FK USU has undergone two external audits through the accreditation process held by BAN-PT in 2012 and LAMPT-Kes in 2017. Both external audit processes resulted in highly satisfactory results (A).

2021

Based on the decision of the USU Rector in August 2021, the Cardiology and Vascular Medicine Department/Study Program adjusted its name to the Cardiovascular Disease Department/Study Program.

Present

On a daily basis, the Cardiovascular Disease Study Program of FK USU synergistically collaborates with other cardiovascular pillars in Indonesia, namely the Indonesian Association of Cardiovascular Specialists (PERKI) and the Indonesian Heart Foundation (YJI) in conducting continuous education, research, and community service.
