Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, Greetings to all of us. The Subspecialist Doctor Education Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, was established as a tangible manifestation of the Faculty of Medicine’s commitment to addressing the need for highly competent subspecialist doctors, both in clinical, academic, and research fields. Since receiving the operational permit on July 2, 2021, through the Rector’s Decree No. 2374/UN5.1.R/SK/PRS/202, we have continuously strived to develop this program to produce graduates who are excellent, have integrity, and are ready to contribute to the improvement of women’s healthcare quality, especially in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology. With the support of professional teaching staff, complete educational facilities, and a conducive academic environment, we are confident that graduates of the Subspecialist Doctor Education Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology will have a competitive edge at both national and international levels. We uphold the values of BINTANG (Faithful to God Almighty, Innovative, Resilient, and Wise) as the moral and professional foundation for delivering education. Our vision is to become a leading center for subspecialist education in obstetrics and gynecology in Southeast Asia by 2030, focusing on assisted reproductive technology, fetal therapy, and comprehensive gynecological cancer management. In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude for the attention and support from all parties—whether academic staff, partner institutions, or the general public. May our presence contribute positively to the nation's intellectual growth and improve Indonesian women's health status. Wassalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Subspecialty

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Subspecialty

Graduates of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine subspecialty have extensive career prospects, particularly in addressing the rising trend of high-risk pregnancies, advanced maternal age, and comorbidities during pregnancy. Experts in this field are highly needed in referral hospitals, teaching hospitals, and tertiary care centers to manage prenatal screening, fetal monitoring, and obstetric complication management.
With expertise in advanced technologies such as ultrasonography (including neuro sonography and Doppler), Noninvasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), and multidisciplinary collaborative care, Maternal-Fetal Medicine subspecialists have great opportunities to contribute to the development of obstetric telemedicine, referral consultation services, and prenatal education and training. In the future, integrating artificial intelligence in fetal image interpretation will also open up opportunities for research and innovative development.

Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility (FER) Subspecialty

Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility (FER) Subspecialty

The field of Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility (FER) is one of the fastest-growing subspecialties globally. With the rising incidence of fertility disorders, increasing age at marriage, and growing demand for advanced fertility services, FER graduates are highly sought after in fertility clinics, private hospitals, and IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) centers.
FER subspecialists are skilled in managing hormonal disorders, conducting Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) programs, and performing advanced techniques such as embryo freezing, PGT-A, and fertility preservation. Graduates also have great opportunities to pursue careers in research, embryology laboratory technology, bioidentical hormone development, and genetic counseling. The demand for these services is not only high in major cities but is also expanding in other regions with the support of technology and teleconsultation networks.

Gynecologic Oncology Subspecialty

Gynecologic Oncology Subspecialty

The gynecologic oncology subspecialty plays a strategic role in the healthcare system as an essential part of cancer management in women's health. Graduates of this subspecialty are involved in early diagnosis, major oncologic surgical procedures, chemotherapy, and rehabilitation of patients with cervical, endometrial, ovarian, and other gynecologic cancers.

With expertise in advanced surgical techniques—including laparoscopy and robotic approaches—and a deep understanding of targeted therapy and immunotherapy, gynecologic oncology subspecialists have strong potential to become pioneers in developing cancer services in Indonesia. Beyond clinical practice, graduates also play a vital role in public education, HPV DNA-based cervical cancer screening, and research and policy development for preventive strategies in reproductive health.

Alumni Testimonials

During my subspecialist education in Fetomaternal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, I learned how to manage high-risk pregnancies and was trained to think critically and make decisions in complex situations. The curriculum was highly structured, with direct exposure to nationally referred cases. I now feel more prepared to provide quality care to mothers and fetuses while also contributing to the development of prenatal services in the region.

The FER program at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, equipped me with clinical expertise and assisted reproductive technology that is highly relevant to today’s societal needs. I received hands-on training in IVF, reproductive hormones, as well as PGT procedures and fertility preservation. This experience has been invaluable, especially in building high-standard fertility services that empathize with couples struggling to conceive.
