Specialist Medical Education Program (Sp-1)

The Specialist Program in Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is a study program that teaches skills to diagnose and treat patients who need anesthesia and intensive therapy, including critical patients and patients who need pain management through a quality learning process with an integrated curriculum and under the full supervision of educators.

This study program is committed to achieving its vision and mission, which is to make students prospective anesthesiologists who are knowledgeable, skilled, and mentally strong to face surgery, childbirth, and other medical procedures in the future. Students who have completed this study program hold the Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialist (Sp.An-TI.) degree.

History

1977 - 1994

In 1977, dr. Maruli Pardede, DSAn, and dr. A. Sani P. Nasution, DSAn, began to establish a stand-alone Anesthesiology Department (which was initially still united with the Surgery Department). In 1980, the first resident was dr. M. Zuchri Arba Pohan, he was immediately sent to the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Indonesia (FK UI) Jakarta, and the next resident was dr. Iqbal Mustaffa who was also sent to FK UI Jakarta. Then, in 1981, dr. T. H. Marbun, DSAn followed by dr. Oloan SM. Siahaan, DSAn returned from his studies and became staff of the Anesthesiology Department of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU). In 1982, dr. Chairul M. Mursin was accepted as a staff of the Anesthesiology Department of the Faculty of Medicine, USU, and was sent to the Faculty of Medicine, UI Jakarta, to continue his education in Anesthesiology. After that, in 1985-1986, dr. M. Zuchri Arba Pohan, DSAn along with dr. Rina H. Manurung, DSAn followed by dr. Chairul M. Mursin, DSAn returned from their education and strengthened the ranks of the Anesthesiology Department at Faculty of Medicine, USU, Medan. In 1989-1990, 4 staff candidates were accepted, namely: dr. Hasanul Arifin, dr. Asmin Lubis, dr. Nazaruddin Umar, and dr. Achsanuddin Hanafie, who were then sent to continue their education at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga (FK UNAIR) Surabaya, and in 1994 they returned.

1994 - 2001

With the return of the four staff from Surabaya in 1994 - 1997, the revamping of Undergraduate Education (S-I) was held, and preparations were made for the opening of the Specialist Program in Anesthesiology at FK USU. In 1998, with the support of the IDSAI (Indonesian Anesthesiology Specialist Association) which is now known as PERDATIN (Indonesian Society of Anesthesiologists and Intensive Therapy), USU Chancellor, Dean of FK USU, Coordinator of the FK USU Specialist Education Program, and H. Adam Malik Central General Hospital (RSUP) and all related parties, it is expected that soon the Faculty of Medicine USU will open a Specialist Doctor Education Program in Anesthesiology. On January 10, 1998, the Dean Decree of Faculty of Medicine USU No. 6 / JO5. 5 / SK / AK / 1998 on the Establishment of the Preparation Committee for the Opening of the Specialist Program in Anesthesiology at the Faculty of Medicine USU with Dr. A. Sani P. Nasution SpAn, as Chairman. In 1996-2001 also joined Dr. Akhyar Hamonangan Nasution, SpAn precisely in 1999, who made the transition of employment status from the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Education, then followed by Dr. Muhammad AR, SpAn, Dr. Yutu Solihat, SpAn, and Dr. Soejat Harto, SpAn. In July 2001, the Specialist Program in Anesthesiology of Faculty of Medicine USU was officially opened.

2006

Initially, education began with a foster father system and as the foster father was the Anesthesiology Department of FK UNAIR / RSUP. dr. Soetomo Surabaya. With the issuance of the Decree of the Ministry of National Education Directorate General of Higher Education, no. 3750 / D / T / 2006 regarding the permit to organize the USU Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Specialist Study Program in 2006 finally, Universitas Sumatera Utara could independently open Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy education. Along with developing the world of education, a continuous medical education process is needed to achieve higher professionalism in a competency-based, quality, and responsible discipline.
