Research Topics

Each of these research topics aims to improve understanding of neurological disorders, develop more effective diagnostic and therapeutic methods, and improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for patients with neurological disorders. The following are the research topics in the Specialist-1 Program in Neurology of the Universitas Sumatera Utara Faculty of Medicine:

Neurodegenerative and Dementia
Neurodegenerative and Dementia

This research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other dementias, including the identification of biomarkers for early diagnosis, pathophysiologic mechanisms of disease, and the development of novel therapies to inhibit or halt disease progression. This research aims to improve understanding of the causes and progression of neurodegenerative diseases and develop interventions that can improve patients' quality of life.

Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation
Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation

This research is conducted to study the risk factors, pathophysiological mechanisms, and management of stroke, including prevention and rehabilitation strategies to reduce stroke incidence, improve treatment outcomes, and maximize post-stroke patient recovery. Topics include developing faster and more accurate diagnostic techniques, evaluating the effectiveness of various therapeutic interventions, and developing rehabilitation programs that can help patients recover optimally.

Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders
Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders

This research focuses on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of epilepsy and other seizure disorders. It includes the identification of genetic and environmental factors that influence the occurrence of seizures, the development of improved monitoring and diagnosis techniques, and the evaluation of the effectiveness of antiepileptic drugs and alternative treatment methods such as vagus nerve stimulation. This research aims to improve seizure control and quality of life for patients with epilepsy.

Neuropathy and Neuromuscular Diseases
Neuropathy and Neuromuscular Diseases

This research studies neuropathies and neuromuscular diseases such as diabetic neuropathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and myasthenia gravis. With research topics that include identifying pathophysiological mechanisms, developing improved diagnostic methods, and testing new therapies that can slow or stop disease progression, this research aims to improve understanding of these diseases and develop more effective interventions.

Headache and Chronic Pain
Headache and Chronic Pain

This research aims to understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms of headache and chronic pain, including migraine and neuropathic pain, to improve chronic pain management and the quality of life of patients suffering from these conditions. Research topics include identifying pain triggers, developing improved diagnostic methods, and evaluating the effectiveness of various pain management therapies, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological.
