History

1937

Koningin Emma Klinik was originally a center for pulmonary disease services, a clinic established in 1937 under the auspices of the Stichting Centrale Vereniging tot Bestrijding der Tuberculose (SCVT), a foundation for the eradication of tuberculosis in Medan that specialized in tuberculosis, equipped with a consultation bureau, which at that time was an advancement in the field of tuberculosis treatment because previously problem-solving was more emphasized on treating patients in sanatoriums.

1952

In 1952, the Rumah Sakit Paru-Paru Medan (RSPP) was established on Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan was known as Jalan Jati Medan at that time. The Rumah Sakit Paru-Paru Medan (RSPP) was not administered by the Pirngadi Medan Hospital. Although adjacent, it stood alone and was last known as BP4 Medan. Unfortunately, the building with an inscription from the International Union Against Tuberculosis Disease (IUALTD), an agency under WHO, had to be moved to Jalan Gaperta Ujung, and a luxury house was built. Since its inception, pulmonary science education has been carried out in this place, including both professional medical education and specialist education. Dr. H. Raden Soeroso, who led the Rumah Sakit Paru-Paru Medan since March 8, 1957, was inaugurated as an extraordinary professor (long arts) of lung specialists.

1958

In 1958, Prof. H. R Soeroso became the founding pioneer of the Department of Pulmonary Sciences in Medan as well as the Chairman of the Department of Pulmonary Sciences and was appointed Dean of the USU Faculty of Medicine in 1959. The Department of Pulmonary Medicine of the USU Faculty of Medicine is one of the earliest educational centers among the three educational centers in Indonesia and stands alone without having to expand from Internal Medicine. Furthermore, successively who served as head of the department were: dr. HM Mochtar Tarigan. Sp.P from 1980 to 1986, dr. Luhur Soeroso. Sp.P from 1986 to 1995, dr. Sugito, Sp.P(K) from 1995 to 1997 and dr. Sumarli, Sp.P(K) from 1998 to 2000, and Prof. dr. Luhur Soeroso. Sp.P(K) from 2000 to the present.

2024

To this day, the Department of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine in Medan has produced more than 81 Pulmonary Specialists. Education is carried out at H. Adam Malik Hospital Medan, Hajj Hospital Medan, Pulmonary Disease Treatment Center (BP4) Medan, Pirngadi Hospital, and Tobacco Deli Hospital Medan.
