History

1982

The Specialist 1 Program in Forensic Medicine has existed for a long time. Initially, it was managed by professional associations and conducted as an apprenticeship education before being transferred to state higher education institutions. In 1978, the forensic specialist education program adopted the educational pattern outlined in the catalog of the Specialist 1 Program in Forensic Medicine. This became the foundation for the education of forensic medical specialists, which was later formalized through Decree No. 076/U/1980 dated March 10, 1980, and reinforced by the Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 152/DIKTI/Kep/2007. A structured curriculum for the Specialist 1 Program in Forensic Medicine, with minimum competency standards, was developed in 1987. To meet the demand for highly educated human resources with academic competence, independence, professionalism, and competitiveness for national development, in 1980, the Health Sciences Consortium conducted visitations to all state medical faculties across Indonesia to assess their capabilities in organizing specialist education programs. Subsequently, Universitas Sumatera Utara, as one of the leading universities in Indonesia, established the Specialist 1 Program on December 4, 1982, based on a decree issued by the Directorate General of Higher Education, Department of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 054/DJ/Kep/1982, designating the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Sumatera Utara as the institution for organizing the Specialist 1 Program in Forensic Medicine.

2000

The official use of the title "Forensic Specialist" began in 1994 with the establishment of the Indonesian Forensic Doctors Association (PDFI). Before this, forensic practitioners were part of the Indonesian Pathology Experts Association (IAPI), with several changes to the title over time until it reached its current form. The establishment of the Collegium of Forensic Medical Specialists was formalized in 2000. To standardize the quality of forensic medical specialists' education graduates nationwide, a National Examination was instituted as a benchmark for quality, beginning in 2002. In its development, the need to adapt the name of the collegium to reflect advancements in the field and evolving demands became evident. Consequently, it was decided to rename the collegium to the Collegium of Forensic Medicine and Medicolegal Studies, initiated in 2007, although it has yet to receive official authorization to this day.
