Monday, June 15, 2026 – The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU), once again welcomed a delegation from Dr. Ferdinand Lumbantobing Regional Hospital (RSUD FL Tobing) Sibolga for a follow-up meeting to a previous discussion held in May 2026. The meeting was attended by the Dean of FK USU and the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Internationalization to discuss the development of a hospital-based Specialist Medical Education Program (PPDS) through a Main Teaching Hospital model (RSPPU).

The meeting formed part of the ongoing efforts of both institutions to strengthen collaboration in specialist medical education while supporting improvements in healthcare services in Sibolga and its surrounding areas. Previously, FK USU and RSUD FL Tobing had discussed various aspects of strengthening cooperation, including the hospital’s readiness as a teaching facility, human resource development, healthcare quality improvement, and support for specialist medical education programs.

During this follow-up discussion, the focus was directed toward strategic preparations required to support the implementation of the hospital-based specialist medical education model. Topics included the readiness of healthcare facilities, capacity building for educators and clinical supervisors, educational governance, and opportunities to develop specialist training programs that could be conducted under the Main Teaching Hospital scheme.

The Dean of FK USU emphasized that the development of a hospital-based model represents an important step in expanding access to specialist medical education while addressing the growing demand for specialist healthcare professionals across different regions. Through strong synergy between educational institutions and hospitals, the educational process can be aligned more effectively with the healthcare needs of the community.

Meanwhile, representatives of Dr. Ferdinand Lumbantobing Regional Hospital Sibolga reaffirmed their commitment to continuously enhancing the hospital’s capacity and readiness to support specialist medical education. These efforts are expected not only to contribute to the development of healthcare human resources but also to improve the quality of healthcare services for communities in the western coastal region of North Sumatra.

In addition to educational matters, both institutions explored opportunities for collaboration in research and community service as part of the implementation of the three pillars of higher education. An integrated approach that combines education, research, and healthcare services is expected to generate innovations with tangible benefits for society.

Through this meeting, FK USU and Dr. Ferdinand Lumbantobing Regional Hospital Sibolga reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership in developing hospital-based specialist medical education. The discussion marks an important step toward establishing a high-quality, adaptive medical education system capable of meeting healthcare service needs at both regional and national levels.
