On Saturday, March 4, 2023, the Department of Physiology of Faculty of Medicine USU held a guest lecture entitled “Sympaho-endocrine Mechanism in Blood Pressure Regulation” delivered by guest lecturer Prof. dr. Cheng Hwee Ming, Ph.D from the Department of Physiology University Malaya-Malaysia. According to Dr. dr. Yetty Machrina, M.Kes, AIFO-K, Sp.KKLP, as Head of the Department of Physiology of Faculty of Medicine USU, has carried out this activity, also known as conceptual talk in physiology, five times since 2021, and today is the sixth time. Since 2021 the activity has been carried out online, and for this time, Alhamdulillah it can be carried out offline. The selection of guest lecture titles is adjusted to the running block. 4th-semester students will enter the Cardiovascular system (CVS) block, so it is hoped that with this guest lecture, students can have a basic concept of blood pressure regulation by Neuro hormonals to maintain homeostasis. Blood pressure is one of the vital signs that must be considered in every patient. High and low blood pressure can be a physiological or pathological response.
The activity, which carries the theme Physiology Go with the Gradient, was attended by more than 100 participants consisting of Undergraduate Professional Doctor Education (PSPD) students, Biomedicine Master Students, and PPDS students who are in Physiology stasis or whose professional fields are related to the cardiovascular system. The guest lecture was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine USU, Prof. Dr. dr. Aldy Safruddin Rambe, Sp.S (K), followed by a Mangulosi activity of Prof. dr. Cheng Hwee Ming, Ph.D. The guest lecture was carried out using an interactive method and ended with a physiology quiz using Kahoot. Three participants with the best scores received prizes from the Department of Physiology in the form of Cardiovascular Physiology books by Cheng Hwee Ming and Physiology Go with the Gradient t-shirts.
I, as the Heaf of the Physiology Department of Faculty of Medicine USU, would like to thank the students who are members of the Physiology FGD (Focus Group Discussion) who have worked together and cooperated for the implementation of this activity and all parties who support and succeeded this event. Hopefully, this activity will motivate students to study and understand physiology. “Physiology is dynamic and always follows changes (gradient) to maintain homeostasis”, said Dr. Yetty Machrina.
