Specialist-2 Program in Surgery

The Surgical Subspecialist Program of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, aims to become a center for education, service, and development of surgical subspecialists who are superior, leading, and dignified in Indonesia in 2030. Producing oncology surgery subspecialists who can compete globally, especially in minimally invasive head and neck surgery and oncoplasty. Producing digestive surgery subspecialists who can plan, implement, and perform post-liver transplantation care.

With a focus on developing clinical skills and up-to-date knowledge, students in this program will undergo intensive practical education in various surgical fields, including general surgery, orthopedic surgery, and plastic surgery. Graduates of this program will become leaders in the field of surgery, provide high-quality care, and contribute to improving healthcare standards in Indonesia.

History

1962

In 1962, upon Dr. W.M. Tamboenan's return from the United States to study cancer surgery at the University of Washington, he established a tumor clinic in the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine of Indonesia / Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital which handled all cancer cases including organs of the head neck, soft tissue, breast and abdominal cavity.

1977

Oncology Surgery Subspecialist Medical Education in Indonesia began in 1977 at the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine of Indonesia / Central General Hospital Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Jakarta. In 1984, the Indonesian Association of Oncology Surgeons (PERABOI) was recognized as a subsidiary organization of the Indonesian Association of Surgeons (IKABI), and Oncology Surgery Subspecialist Medical Education began to be organized as subspecialist education.

1979

Referring to the development of the digestive system of Surgery, which is growing very fast, followed by the growth of subspecialists after general surgery specialist education, such as orthopedics, urology, thoracic, and cardiovascular, 47 general surgeons who are interested in and manage many digestive surgery cases held a meeting in Bali in July 1979, feeling the need for the formation of the Indonesian Digestive Surgeons Association (IKABDI). The meeting also discussed the embryonic formation of the Indonesian Collegium of Digestive Surgery (KIBDI).

1980

Non-formal education of Digestive Surgery Subspecialists, with an internship model, began in 1980 with internship centers in the Department of Surgery Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, FKUI, Hasan Sadikin Hospital FK Unpad and Dr Sutomo Hospital FK UNAIR. In 1998, through 22 years of preparation, the Indonesian Collegium of Digestive Surgery was officially established, which plays a role in maintaining quality through the development of competency standards, curriculum, and national final evaluation for prospective Digestive Surgery Subspecialists.

2008

As of 2018, there are 8 Oncology Surgery subspecialty education centers in Indonesia, namely. 1) Oncology Surgery Subspecialist Medical Education Center FK UI / Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital Jakarta; 2) Center for Medical Education of Oncology Surgery Subspecialists FK UNPAD / Hasan Sadikin Hospital Bandung; 3) Center for Medical Education of Oncology Surgery Subspecialists FK UNDIP / Central General Hospital dr. Karadi Semarang; 4) Center for Medical Education of Oncology Surgery Subspecialists FK UNUD / Sanglah Hospital Denpasar; 5) Center for Medical Education of Oncology Surgery Subspecialists FK UNHAS / Dr. Wahidin Hospital Makassar; 6) Center for Medical Education of Oncology Surgery Subspecialists FK UNIBRAW / Syaiful Anwar Hospital Malang; 7) Center for Medical Education of Oncology Surgery Subspecialists FK UGM / RS Sardjito Yogyakarta; 8) Center for Medical Education of Oncology Surgery Subspecialists FK UNAND / RS dr. M. Djamil Padang. Based on the 2018 PERABOI MUNAS results, it was created to open an Oncology Surgery education center in Medan, which would become the ninth Oncology Surgery Education Center in Indonesia.
