The role of semaglutide in Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) diseases was the main topic of the Clinical Nutrition Mini Seminar held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The discussion also addressed the effectiveness of semaglutide in reducing fat mass in individuals with obesity or overweight accompanied by other health conditions.
The seminar, "The Role of Semaglutide Across the CKM Spectrum," was attended by lecturers from the Clinical Nutrition Study Program, postgraduate students of the Clinical Nutrition Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, and members of the Perhimpunan Dokter Gizi Klinik Indonesia (PDGKI) of North Sumatra. It was held in collaboration with PT Novo Nordisk Indonesia.
The seminar provided valuable insights for clinical nutrition specialists regarding managing CKM diseases and obesity. One key point highlighted was that semaglutide belongs to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class, which mimics the body's natural hormones in regulating blood glucose levels and appetite. Its mechanism includes stimulating insulin release, suppressing glucagon production, and slowing gastric emptying to enhance satiety.
It is important to emphasize that semaglutide is not a substitute for insulin and is not recommended for individuals with type 1 diabetes. For optimal results, its use must be combined with a healthy diet and physical activity to reinforce the critical role of clinical nutrition in treatment strategies.
This seminar also served as a productive forum for discussing the integration of semaglutide into comprehensive patient management while emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in addressing CKM disorders and obesity. The event successfully enhanced participants' understanding of the latest therapeutic options in clinical nutrition practice.
