The Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Sumatera Utara, through its Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Study Program, once again carried out its 2025 pioneering community service program at Pesantren Darul Arafah Raya. The activity carried the theme “Emergency Response in Daily Life, Basic Life Support, and Clean and Healthy Living Behavior among Adolescent Islamic Boarding School Students” and was aimed at male and female high school-level students at the pesantren.

The program involved two Community Service teams from the Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Study Program.

The first team was chaired by dr. Rr. Sinta Irina, with members dr. Andriamuri Primaputra Lubis and dr. Cut Meliza Zainumi. The program aimed to improve students’ knowledge and skills in responding to daily emergency situations, including Basic Life Support (BLS) training, recognition of medical emergency conditions, and the importance of maintaining clean and healthy living habits within the boarding school environment.

According to dr. Rr. Sinta Irina, the activity demonstrates the concern of the Faculty of Medicine USU in delivering health education to the community, particularly young people in Islamic boarding schools.

“We are very pleased with the warm welcome from Darul Arafah Raya Islamic Boarding School toward our team. Through this Basic Life Support training, we hope students will understand first-aid measures in emergency situations around them,” she stated.

During the educational sessions, participants were also introduced to several emergency conditions such as tetanus, including the importance of recognizing early signs of infection and understanding disease transmission pathways to ensure proper early treatment.

Meanwhile, the second team was chaired by Dr. dr. Raka Jati Prasetya, with members Dr. dr. Wulan Fadinie and dr. Ester Silaen. The team explained that the community service activity is expected to become the starting point for sustainable collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine USU and the pesantren in the field of health education.

“We hope this activity can provide valuable knowledge for the students and strengthen ongoing cooperation in the future,” he explained.

Representatives of Pesantren Darul Arafah Raya also expressed appreciation for the implementation of the activity. H. Ranggi Satuzair Singh conveyed gratitude for the training provided to the students.

“The benefits of this activity are truly remarkable for our students in preparing themselves to face emergency situations. We hope activities like this can continue in the future,” he said.

The participants’ enthusiasm was clearly visible throughout the training sessions. One participant, Adyatma Sigit Prabowo, expressed his excitement about joining the program and hoped the knowledge gained would be beneficial for himself and those around him.

A similar sentiment was shared by Cinta Elfia Anessia, who expressed gratitude to the lecturers of the Faculty of Medicine USU for the knowledge and experience shared during the activity.

Through this community service initiative, the Faculty of Medicine USU hopes to continue contributing to improving public health literacy while fostering a younger generation that is responsive to emergency situations and more aware of environmental health.
